Background: Following Saturday's (20 January) demonstrations, Paris policemen again took to the streets on Monday (22 January). The policemen were voicing their grievances over working conditions. In a rally near the Police Headquarters, the men renewed their demands for higher pay and more effective methods of dealing with crime.

SYNOPSIS: The Paris police force is particularly worried about acts of violence committed against their men. Last year, thirty-one policemen were killed and one thousand-four-hundred injured. The policemen say they do not want a situation to development in Paris similar to Spain where, they say, police get killed every day. Already this year, over fifteen Paris police officers have been injured on duty.

At a rally outside Notre Dame Cathedral the policemen put forward their demands. These include a parliamentary debate on the problems facing the force, and the adoption of a legal framework to give more protection to policemen. They also demanded that their members of parliament give a firm commitment to the police force, and called for the introduction of a long-term plan, governing recruitment and police equipment. Feelings ran high as they declared that they did not want to become the victims of a crumbling society, a remark made by President Giscard d'Estiang.
