Background: Several hundred unionists marched on the Elysee Palace in Paris on Wednesday (August 28) to protest over inflation and high taxation. The demonstration came the day after a nationwide speech on television by President Giscard D'Estaing calling on workers to help him fight inflation.

The demonstrators marched to the Presidential Palace to hand in petitions. Their mood was summed up by French Communist Party leader Georges Marchais who predicted there could be widespread strikes in France if the Government failed to curb fast rising prices.

The demonstrators represented Unions of the Paris region affiliated with the CGT (General Workers Confederation), the most powerful union in France.

Police dispersed the crowd after the petitions had been handed in.
