  • Description

FEARS WERE EXPRESSED TODAY (MONDAY) FOR THE FUTURE OF VENICE AND FLORENCE, TWO OF ITALY'S MOST BEAUTIFUL CITIES, AS THE LONG-TERM DAMAGE CAUSED BY RECENT FLOODS BECAME APPARENT. AND YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) THE PONTE NUOVO OR SOLFERINO BRIDGE OVER THE RIVER ARNO A. PISA BECAME ANOTHER VICTIM OF THE FLOOD.

THE WATERS ARE SUBSIDING IN VENICE AND NOW THE CITY IS TAKING STOCK OF THE DAMAGE. IT IS EASY TO SEE THE DAMAGE CAUSED TO PERSONAL BELONGINGS, BUT PERHAPS THE MOST SERIOUS DAMAGE HAS BEEN TO THE FOUNDATIONS OF FAMOUS CHURCHES, PALACES AND BUILDINGS, MANY OF THEM MASTERPIECES OF RENAISSANCE ARCHITECTURE. THE DAMAGE TO ART TREASURES IN VENICE WAS NOT SO SERIOUS AS IN FLORENCE, BUT ESTIMATES OF LOSSES SUFFERED IN THE CANAL CITY ARE IMPRESSIVE. NEWSPAPERS PUT THE DAMAGE IN THE HISTORIC CENTRE OF THE CITY OF 35,000 MILLION LIRA (GBP14,370,000), ABOUT A THIRD OF IT TO SHOPS AND BUSINESSES.

ONE COMPARATIVELY NEW STRUCTURE TO BE DESTROYED BY THE FLOOD WAS THE PONTE NUOVO, OR SOLFERINO BRIDGE, OVER THE RIVER ARNO AT PISA. IT COLLAPSED ON SUNDAY AFTER BEING UNDERMINED BY THE FLOODWATERS.

THE WHILE MARBLE BRIDGE HAD BEEN CLOSED TO TRAFFIC BECAUSE OF ITS UNSTABLE CONDITION AND THERE WERE NO CASUALTIES. THE PONTE NUOVO WAS REBUILT SIX YEARS AGO AFTER BEING WRECKED IN THE WAR.
