  • Description

General Kassem, leader of the Republican coup in Iraq this month a year ago, attended American Independence Day reception at the U.S. Embassy Bagdad.

Among the other guests were representatives of the Soviet Union and Nationalist China.

The reception cane as Kassem continued to release prisoners seized during and after the coup. Their release indicated the growing liberal attitude of the Prime Minister to rehabilitate useful men who served the Monarchy.

At the same time, the Prime Minister took steps to reduce the power of the Communist-controlled popular resistance groups formed originally to bulwark the Republican regime after the coup.

The trial of strength between Kassem and the Communists died to disturbances in the city in which one man was killed July 4.

Next day he ordered all units of the popular resistance groups to be placed under direct army control - in a bid to curb their freelance political agitation. He also told the Communists to halt their attempts to form a Popular Front, reiterating his earlier appeal to political parties to abstain from political activity at this transitional stage of the nation's evolution.
