  • Description

In New York, a strike that is depriving the city of its three main daily newspapers has entered its second week - at an estimated cost of two million dollars a day in lost revenue. Talks were due to resume at the weekend (August 18 - 20) in a bid to end the industrial action which has shut down the New York Times, the Daily News and the New York Post. The strike arose when printing press operators decided to protest at what they saw as efforts by the publishers to cut their work forces by half.

SYNOPSIS: For New York citizens, the absence of their favourite newspapers has made a dismal start to each day. Businessmen, commuters, horse-racing enthusiasts and housewives have missed the three dailies so much that spacial tabloids are being produced by quick-witted entrepreneurs to plug the gap. One year-old paper alone has boosted its circulation from 50,000 to 300,000 during the strike which some say could last until October, as reporter Visnews Richard Watt discovered.
