  • Description

There have been colourful celebrations marking the 18th anniversary of the proclamation of a republic in Niger, in Central Africa.

SYNOPSIS: In the Niger capital of Niamey, dancers performed in front of President Senyi Kountche who gave the people some hope for the year to come.

In his national address marking the Anniversary, President Kountche said it had been a good year for agriculture. However, the Government was not completely happy with future prospects in some parts of the country and was considering setting up stockpile should difficulties arise anywhere.

President Kountche said another subject for joy was the income from uranium sales. This revenue had been reinvested in the country to give the country a new dynamism, and strengthen the country's structure.

The President thanked the countries who had helped Niger in its development - notably France, Algeria, Canada, West Germany, Saudi Arabia, China, Libya and Nigeria, which has started to supply Niger with electricity from its Kainji Dam project. On the day of the festivities, President Kountche inaugurated the first electric supply line from the Kainji Dam project to Niger.
