  • Description

Flags were at half-mast at Veere, Holland, April 7, when the local fishing fleet was seen off by young and old in national costumes.

Veere's fishing fleet will never sail from the ancient port again. A huge dam across the Veerschegat - part of the country's flood prevention programme - is to be completed this month. It will be the highest seawall in Holland, and it will cut Veere off from the sea.

A new harbour for the fishing fleet has been built outside the dam. It provides a new base for the boats, but the fishermen now have a 1 1/2 hours' road journey to get aboard.
