More than a hundred retarded children took part in a sports day in Singapore over the weekend. The events were organised by the Spastic Children's Association, financed by Government funds and public donations.
President Benjamin Sheares and the First Lady were official guests at the sports day.
Singapore's Spastic Children's Association has a staff of 12 full-time workers. Seven of them are paid salaries and the remainder are volunteers from other social bodies.
Numerous other volunteers turned out over the weekend to help with the organisation of the sporting events.
The children took art in races, relays, obstacle courses and light events calculated to give most of them the chance of winning a prize.
Mrs. Sheares congratulated the winners at the end of the day and presented prizes to the place-getters.
