  • Description

More people than ever before will watch this year's Olympic Games in Munich. A massive communications system has been installed in the city to provide television coverage for an international audience that could number a thousand million people.

Pictures of sporting events as they happen will be relayed from a hundred cameras, strategically placed in the various stadiums and arenas. They'll be transmitted from a 285-metre television tower which already dominates the Munich skyline. Television pictures will also be beamed simultaneously to two Earth satellites - one over the Pacific, the other over the Indian Ocean.

Journalists from television, radio, newspapers and news agencies will have some of the finest facilities ever made available to an international press corps. A four-storey press centre will cater for the four thousand newsmen expected to attend the games. Whatever language the journalist uses, he'll find equipment at the centre to help him. Typewriters in the main newsroom have 144 different keyboards. The centre also has 69 teleprinter machines, 211 telephones and 34 photo-transmitting machines. The centre will be busy twenty-four hours a day as journalist work to deadlines in time zones around the world.
