    THE LATEST AMERICAN MANNED SPACE VENTURE IS TO CONTINUE DESPITE TROUBLE IN THE SATELLITE'S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM.THE TWO ASTRONAUTS, GRODON COOPER AND CHARLES CONRAD TONIGHT (SATURDAY) WERE ORDERED TO REMAIN ALOFT FOR AT LEAST ANOTHER DAY.

    THIS MEANS TO SATELLITE WILL TRAVEL AT LEAST 18 ORBITS ABOUT EARTH.

    THE SPACE MISSION HAD BEEN PLANNED FOR 121 ORBITS -- LASTING MORE THAN THREE MILLION MILES OR EIGHT DAYS -- BUT DURING THE SECOND ORBIT TROUBLE DEVELOPED WITH THE ELECTRICAL GENERATING SYSTEM.THE AMERICANS ARE USING A COMBINATION OF HYDROGEN AND OXYGEN TO GENERATE POWER WITHIN THE SATELLITE RATHER THAN HAVING TO USE HEAVY BATTERY SYSTEMS.

    IT WAS A FAULT IN THE HYDROGEN/OXYGEN GENERATING SYSTEM WHICH LED TO DELAYS IN BLAST OFF LAST WEEK.

    THE GEMINI-5 SPACECRAFT WAS LAUNCHED WITHOUT TROUBLE AT CAPE KENNEDY THIS AFTERNOON (GMT).

    SEVEN AND A HALF HOURS AFTER BLAST OFF IT WAS ANNOUNCED THE SPACE JOURNEY WOULD CONTINUE FOR ANOTHER DAY DESPITE THE GENERATOR TROUBLE.IT IS EXPECTED THE SATELLITE WILL BE BROUGHT DOBACK DOWN IN THE WESTERN ATLANTIC TOMORROW EVENING (ABOUT 1918 GMT) AFTER ONLY 29 HOURS.

    DURING THE RESTRICTED ORBIT THE SPACECRAFT WILL BE IN A "POWER DOWN CONFIGURATION" -- ALL NON-ESSENTIAL INSTRUMENTS WILL BE SWITCHED OFF AND THERE WILL BE NO MANOEUVRING.
