Background: THE NEW ZEALAND TRADE MINISTER, MR. J.R. MARSHALL, WHO IS ALSO DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER, ARRIVED FROM AUSTRALIA AT LONDON AIRPORT, LATE ON MAY 20, FOR DISCUSSIONS WITH THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT ON THE UNITED KINGDOM'S PROPOSED ENTRY INTO THE EUROPEAN COMMON MARKET.

AFTER TALKS ON THE SAME SUBJECT WITH THE AUSTRALIAN MINISTER FOR TRADE. MR. J. McEWEN - IN SYDNEY ON MAY 18-19 - MR. MARSHALL TOLD A PRESS CONFERENCE THAT NEW ZEALAND COULD LOSE ALMOST 50 PER CENT OF ITS EXPORT TRADE IF BRITAIN JOINED THE COMMON MARKET. NEW ZEALAND WAS MORE DEPENDENT ON BRITAIN FOR THE SALE OF GOODS THAN ANY OTHER COUNTRY. "BUT WE ARE CERTAIN THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT WILL MAINTAIN ITS ASSURANCES TO TAKE OUR GOODS."
MR. MARSHALL THOUGHT AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND COULD ULTIMATELY ESTABLISH AN OCEANIA COMMON MARKET. HE ADDED: "OF COURSE, ANY SUCH MARKET COULD NOT BE WHOLLY SELF-SUPPORTING, BUT IT COULD LEAD TO CONSIDERABLY INCREASED TRADE BETWEEN OUR TWO COUNTRIES."
