  • Description

RABAT, THE MOROCCAN CAPITAL, WAS TODAY (SATURDAY) PUTTING THE FINISHING TOUCHES TO THE PREPARATIONS FOR RECEIVING THE DELEGATES OF 26 MOSLEM COUNTRIES FOR THE FIRST-EVER ISLAMIC SUMMIT CONFERENCE WHICH IS TO OPEN ON MONDAY (22 SEPTEMBER) TO DISCUSS THE FATES OF HOLY PLACES IN JERUSALEM.

ALTHOUGH SEVERAL ARAB COUNTRIES HAVE FOR A LONG TIME BEEN ATTEMPTING TO GET A SUMMIT CONFERENCE TO DISCUSS ANTI-ISRAEL ACTION, THIS HAS BEEN OPPOSED BY OTHER MEMBERS OF THE ARAB LEAGUE. THE ANGER THAT SWEPT THE ARAB WORLD AT THE FIRE WHICH DAMAGED THE AL AQSA MOSQUE IN JERUSALEM LAST MONTH, HOWEVER, HAS CONSOLIDATED ARAB SOLIDARITY AND, AT THE SUGGESTION OF KING FAISAL OF SAUDI ARABIA, THIS SUMMIT HAS BEEN CALLED. CONFERENCE SOURCES INDICATE THAT THE MEETING WILL BE RESTRICTED TO RELIGIOUS ISSUES ARISING FROM ISRAELI OCCUPATION OF MOSLEM HOLY PLACES AND THAT IT IS HOPED THAT A "PRESSURE GROUP FOR PEACE" IN THE MIDDLE EAST WILL BE CREATED TO STRENGTHEN ARAB SOLIDARITY.

THE MEETING WILL BE HELD IN A SPECIALLY-EQUIPPED CONFERENCE ROOM IN THE NEW HILTON HOTEL IN RABAT.

SOME DELEGATES HAVE STRESSED THE FACT THAT THE MEETINGS WILL BE "PEACEFUL", IN REBUTTAL OF THOSE CRITICS WHO FEAR THAT THE SUMMIT COULD LEAD TO A CALL FOR A "JIDAH" (HOLY WAR) AGAINST ISRAEL.

DIFFERENCES IN THE ARAB WOULD HAVE NOT BEEN ENTIRELY PUT ASIDE AT THIS TIME, AND SYRIA AND IRAQ ARE NOT EXPECTED TO SEND ANY DELEGATES. OF THE 26 COUNTRIES PARTICIPATING IN THE SUMMIT, ONLY NINE WILL BE REPRESENTED BY THEIR HEADS OF STATE; KING HASSAN OF MOROCCO, KING FAISAL OF SAUDI ARABIA, KING HUSSEIN OF JORDAN, THE SHAH OF IRAN, THE EMIR OF KUWAIT; AND THE PRESIDENTS OF ALGERIA, MAURITANIA, PAKISTAN AND SOMALIA. HEADS OF GOVERNMENT WILL REPRESENT AFGHANISTAN, LEBANON, MALAYSIA AND YEMEN.
