  • Description

Britain's Premier, Mr. Harold Macmillan acted as host to Mr. Kruschev Feb 25 at the Dacha (a country villa) the Russians have put at his disposal fifteen miles from Moscow.

Mr. Macmillan who has been suffering from a heavy cold since he arrived in Moscow Feb 21, did not come outside to meet his guests and be photographed. Instead he gave orders that pictures should be taken in the beamed entrance hall. Here the Prime Minister met Mr. Kruschev and other Russian leaders.

There was coolness in he air at the luncheon - a result of Mr. Kruschev's declaration Feb 24 that the Western proposals for a four-Power Ministers' conference on Germany were "unacceptable".

The two leaders withdrew to a sitting room on the third floor where Mr. Macmillan put several direct questions to Mr. Kruschev about his public speech which he made the previous day, proposing a non-aggression pact, denouncing the German proposal and attacking Persia, Britain's Baghdad ally.

After the one-and-a-half hour luncheon, Mr. Macmillan's cold did not prevent him from joining Mr. Kruschev in a stroll among the pines and beeches surrounding the three storied dacha, which had a Union Jack fluttering from the roof.
