Background: With Great Britain, the Cup holders, leading the Admiral' Cup series, after the first inshore race, yachtsmen from nineteen countries started the second day of the competition on Friday (29 July) with the tough 200 miles (320 km) Channel Race.

SYNOPSIS: In strong northerly winds, the competitors crowded the mainline shore to take advantage of the long run down to the historic Martello Towers at the entrance to the Solent. Extra provisions had to be taken aboard for the event which is expected to finish on Sunday evening.

After stocking up, yachts began making their way to the start.

difficulty, points won in the Channel race will be worth double the amount of the inshore races.

Soon after crossing the starting line, several of the competitors put out their spinnakers in an effort to take advantage of the strong wind.

But soon many yachts found themselves in trouble and the big multi-coloured sails disappeared to be replaced more conventional Genoas.

In the group that ignored the shoreline start was the leader in the first race, the American ...Bay Bee...who eventually finished second in the first event to the United Kingdom's Moonshine. Behind her and in close attendance came Mandrake of Italy.

With the United Kingdom in the lead, the surprise at the end of the first race is the second position held by Hong Kong with the United States third. Top European challengers are Ireland with former holders West Germany in fifth position and Italy sixth. The third race in the series will be on Monday (1 August) with the second of the inshore races.
