  • Description

IN THE INDIAN GENERAL ELECTIONS, THE RULING CONGRESS PARTY MOVED SLOWLY AHEAD OF THE COMBINED OPPOSITION TODAY (SATURDAY) TO EXTEND ITS LEAD TO 33 SEATS, BUT IS EXPECTED TO FALL FAR BEHIND THE 238-SEAT MAJORITY IT HAD IN THE LAST PARLIAMENT. MRS. INDIRA GANDHI, WHOSE OWN POSITION AS PRIME MINISTER HAS BEEN MADE EVEN MORE UNCERTAIN BY THE SITUATION, HAS BEEN IN NEW DELHI KEEPING A CLOSE WATCH ON THE RESULTS AS THEY COME IN.

THE CONGRESS PARTY HAS SUFFERED SERIOUS REVERSES IN THE STATES OF MADRAS, KERALA, ORISSA, RAJASTHAN, PUNJAB, GUHERAT, AND WEST BENGAL. FIVE TOP MINISTERS LOST THEIR SEATS. TODAY'S MIDDAY COUNT GAVE CONGRESS 211 SEATS OUT OF 389 DECLARED, WITH 178 GOING TO THE OPPOSITION SO FAR IN THE 521-MEMBER CENTRAL PARLIAMENT. MRS. GANDHI HAS BEEN VISITING THE PRESS CENTRE SET UP I NEW DELHI TO ENABLE NEWSMEN TO KEEP TRACK OF THE VOTING RESULTS AND THE TREND OF THE ELECTION.

MRS. GANDHI MOSTLY REFUSED TO DISCUSS THE ELECTION WITH THE NEWSMEN. BUT SHE IS SEEN ON THIS FILM TELLING: "I'VE HEARD OF THE DEFEAT OF LEADERS AND COLLEAGUES --WE'RE ALL IN THE HANDS OF THE PEOPLE." (SOUND ON FILM). LAST NIGHT, ALMOST HALF OF THE 52 CABINET AND JUNIOR MINISTERS HAD EITHER LOST THEIR SEATS OF WERE FACING DEFEAT. THE FOOD MINISTER, MR. SUBRAMANIAN, WAS ONE OF THOSE UNSEATED. GAINS HAVE GONE TO BOTH THE COMMUNISTS AND THE RIGHT-WING AND RELIGIOUS PARTIES GONE TO BOTH THE COMMUNISTS AND THE RIGHT-WING AND RELIGIOUS PARTIES.

THE RESPONSE OF THE INDIAN ELECTORATE IS SEEN AS THE RESULT OF A WAVE OF RESENTMENT AGAINST FOOD SHORTAGE, RISING PRICES AND ECONOMIC STAGNATION. IN WEST BENGAL, THE CONGRESS PARTY HAD NEVER BEFORE SUFFERED SUCH HUMILIATING LOSSES -- INCLUDING THE CHIEF MINISTER OF THE STATE, MR. P.C. SEN.THE OPPOSITION PARTIES IN WEST BENGAL HAVE ALREADY STARTED NEGOTIATIONS AMONG THEMSELVES INTO FORMING A GOVERNMENT.
