  • Description

LEONID ZHABOTINSKI, THE 24-STONE (152.4 KGS) RUSSIAN ARMY OFFICER, WON THE WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT WEIGHTLIFTING CHAMPIONSHIP AT THE DYNAMO SPORTS CENTRE IN EAST BERLIN LAST NIGHT (FRIDAY). ZHABOTINSKI FOLLOWED HIS GOLD MEDAL WIN BY SETTING A NEW WORLD RECORD IN THE HEAVYWEIGHT JERK - BEATING HIS OWN FORMER WORLD MARK BY HALF A KILO.

IT WAS THE THIRD YEAR IN SUCCESSION THAT ZHABOTINSKI HAD WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP, AND THERE WERE MANY RUSSIAN ARMY COLLEAGUES IN THE CROWD TO CHEER HIM ON. THE MASSIVE, 28-YEAR OLD, BLOND-HAIRED SOLDIER COLLECTED A TOTAL OF 567.5 KILOS (1,251 POUNDS) IN THE CHAMPIONSHIPS. HIS NEAREST RIVAL WAS 22 YEAR OLD AMERICAN ROBERT BEDNARSKI, WHO TOOK THE SILVER MEDAL WITH 537.5 KILOS (1,184 3/4 POUNDS). ANOTHER RUSSIAN, STANISLAV BATHISHEV, WAS THIRD WITH (530 KILOS) (1,168 1/2 POUNDS).

ZHABOTINSKI'S VICTORY GAVE THE SOVIET UNION THEIR FIFTH GOLD MEDAL. THEY HAD PREVIOUSLY CARRIED OFF THE BANTAM, LIGHTWEIGHT, MIDDLEWEIGHT AND LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT TITLES. ONLY JAPANESE FEATHERWEIGHT, YOSHINOBU MIYAKE, AND HUNGARIAN MIDDLE-HEAVYWEIGHT, GEZA TOTH, BROKE THROUGH THE RUSSIAN DOMINATION.

ZHABOTINSKI'S NEW WORLD RECORD FOR THE HEAVYWEIGHT JERK WAS WITH A JERK LIFT OF 218 KILOS (480.6 POUNDS), WHICH BEAT HIS PREVIOUS WORLD MARK BY HALF A KILO (1.1 POUNDS).
