Background: President Lyndon B. Johnson used the car in which President John F. Kennedy was assassinated for the first time when he took President Diosdado Macapagal of the Philippines with him for a parade through Washington Monday (5 October).

The car is a 1961 limousine. It has been completely rebuilt since the Kennedy assassination (november 22, 1963). It then had three inter-changeable roofs, of metal, fabric and a plastic bubble top. Now it has been reinforced with armour plate and a bullet-proof glass. A White House official said the new glass top could withstand a direct hit from a .30 caliber rifle.

The roof and back panel of the top are glass by a black metal cover can be attached over them for added protection or privacy. The car also has big metal handgrips on the sides to enable Secret Service agents to get aboard easily while it is in motion.

The rebuilding was done by the Ford Motor and a custom auto body firm. The car now has a 500-horse power motor and other heavy duty mechanisms.

George Reedy, White House Press Secretary, said that the car will be used by President Johnson on many trips but he did not preclude the possibility that the President may occasionally ride in open automobiles. The Warren Commission report on President Kennedy's assassination quoted F.B.I. Director J. Edgar Hoover as recommending that the President never ride in an open car.
