  • Description

Greek Cypriots turned out in thousands Dec 13 to vote for either Archbishop Makarios or Mr. John Clerides in the island's first presidential election.

Turkish leader, Dr. Kutchuk, was elected vice-president without opposition Dec 4.

Latest results - still coming in - indicate a clear victory for Archbishop Makarios, despite General Grivas' "attitude of neutrality." Polling was heavy, and women - voting for the first time - have been largely responsible for the wide margin of difference in votes for the two candidates. Sporadic violence marked the election campaign and marred the election itself.

Archbishop Makarios's "Patriotic Front" is supported by most former EOKA men, and most country people. It is opposed by the Democratic Union Party, led by 73-year old John Clerides.Q.C. He was the last Greek-Cypriot to resign from the Governor's executive council in 1959.

The Democratic Union is made up of dissident rightists, including former EOKA leaders. It's strongest backing comes from the Communist Akel Party, whose influence in the Cyprus Republic - to be proclaimed next February - will be assessed after the final result.
