  • Description

MORE THAN 50,000 JAPANESE GATHERED TODAY (6 AUGUST) AT THE PEACE MEMORIAL PARK IN HIROSHIMA TO MARK THE 24TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DROPPING OF THE ATOMIC BOMB ON THE CITY DURING THE LAST DAYS OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR.

MR SETSUO YAMADA, MAYOR OF HIROSHIMA, TOLD THE CROWD THAT ALL MEN SHOULD EXERT EFFORTS TO CREATE A WORLD WITHOUT WAR. A MINUTE OF SILENT PRAYER FOR THE VICTIMS WAS OBSERVED AT 8.15 A.M. THE EXACT TIME OF THE EXPLOSION WHILE TWO REPRESENTATIVES OF THE BEREAVED FAMILIES TOLLED A BELL.

A THOUSAND PIGEONS WERE RELEASED, SYMBOLIC OF THE WISH OF HIROSHIMA'S PEOPLE FOR ETERNAL PEACE. MANY SURVIVORS OF THE EXPLOSION HAVE SINCE DIED OF LEUKEMIA AND FROM OTHER RADIO-ACTIVE EFFECTS. OTHERS LIVE IN FEAR THAT THEY MAY SOME DAY MEET THE SAME FATE.
