  • Description

THE BIEN HOA MILITARY AIRBASE NEAR SAIGON, WHICH WAS DEVASTATED BY A CHAIN OF BOMB EXPLOSIONS YESTERDAY (SUNDAY), HAS BEEN CORDONED OFF. THE BLASTS KILLED 22 MEN (21 AMERICANS, MOSTLY AIR CREWS, MECHANICS AND ORDNANCE PERSONNEL AND ONE VIETNAMESE) AND INJURED 110 OTHERS. IT ALSO DAMAGED 10 AMERICAN AIRFORCE CANBERRA BOMBERS, 25 VIETNAMESE SKYRAIDERS AND SEVERAL OTHER SMALL AIRCRAFT. REPLACEMENT AIRCRAFT ARE BEING FLOWN IN FROM THE PHILIPPINES. MEANWHILE, A TEAM OF UNITED STATES EXPERTS IS EXPECTED FROM WASHINGTON SHORTLY TO INVESTIGATE THE DISASTER.

SPEAKING TO NEWSMEN, GENERAL JOSEPH MOORE, CHIEF OF THE U.S. ARMY'S AIR DIVISION IN SOUTH VIETNAM, SAID THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE AT ALL THAT COMMUNIST VIETCONG INSURGENT HAD CAUSED THE EXPLOSIONS. THE BLASTS BEGAN WHEN A BOMB WENT OFF SPONTANEOUSLY IN THE BELLY OF A B-57 JET BOMBER.

THE AIRBASE, WHERE THE VIETCONG DESTROYED OR DAMAGED 27 AIRCRAFT ON THE GROUND WITH MORTAR FIRE LAST NOVEMBER 1, IS STILL OPERATIONAL. ALL PERSONNEL HAD BEEN EVACUATED FROM A 500-YARD CIRCLE AROUND THE LOADING RAMP BECAUSE OF THE DANGER FROM 10 UNEXPLODED 500-POUND BOMBS STILL ON THE RAMP.
