  • Description

MASSIVE OPERATION I SNOW ENTERING ITS SECOND WEEK IN THE BATANJAN PENINSULA, SOME 355 MILES (ABOUT 570 KMS) NORTH-EAST OF SAIGON. THE OPERATION, CODE-NAMED "SEA DRAGON", INVOLVES SOUTH KOREAN AS WELL AS AMERICAN AND SOUTH VIETNAMESE MARINES.

THE OPERATION IS AIMED AT BLOCKING INFILTRATION ROUTES FROM THE SEA. THE SOUTH KOREANS FOUND MANY ABANDONED AND DESERTED HOUSES, WHICH THEY SET ON FIRE WHILE WARDING OFF VIET CONG SNIPERS.

THE SOUTH KOREANS ARE IN CHARGE OF CLEARING 12 SQUARE MILES (ABOUT 8 SQUARE KMS) OF VIET CONG. MANY CLEVERLY CAMOUFLAGED BUNKERS WERE FOUND, WITH VILLAGERS INSIDE THEM. THE VILLAGERS CRAWLED OUT OF THE BUNKERS ONLY AFTER THE SOUTH KOREANS THREATENED TO FLUSH THEM OUT WITH TEARGAS.

SEVERAL VIET CONG SUSPECTS WERE INTERROGATED, SOME OF THEM RATHER ROUGHLY.
