    Background: MOTOR RACING HISTORY WAS MADE AT THE WEEKEND. VICTORY IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN GRAND PRIX GAVE JIM CLARK A RECORD SEVEN CHAMPIONSHIP RACES IN ONE SEASON.

    DRIVING A LOTUS, THE 27-YEAR-OLD SCOTTISH FARMER LED FROM START TO FINISH TO WIN THE 207-MILE (333-KM) RACE AT EAST LONDON, CAPE PROVINCE, ON SATURDAY. HE HAD ALREADY BEEN ASSURED OF THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP.

    TWENTY CARS LINED UP FOR THE FINAL EVENT OF THE 1963 MOTOR RACING CHAMPIONSHIP CALENDAR. CLARK, OCCUPYING THE FRONT GRID, SHOT STRAIGHT INTO THE LEAD. BY THE END OF THE RACE HE HAD LAPPED THE WHOLE FIELD, APART FROM DAN GURNEY WHO FINISHED SECOND.

    FOR JUST OVER TWO HOURS, CLARK AVERAGED ABOUT 95 MILES (153 KMS) AN HOUR AS HE SPED HIS COVENTRY-CLIMAX-ENGINED RACER THROUGH THE 85 LAPS OF THE TWISTING CIRCUIT BORDERING THE INDIAN OCEAN.

    SEVEN CARS WERE FORCED OUT BY ENGINE FAULTS.

    FINAL RESULT:-
    1. JIM CLARK (BRITAIN, LOTUS), 2 HOURS 10 MINUTES 36.9 SECONDS (2:10:36.9), AVERAGING ABOUT 95 MILES (153 KMS) PER HOUR;
    2. DAN GURNEY (USA, BRABHAM-CLIMAX), (2:11:43.7), ABOUT 94.8 M.P.H. (152 K.P.H.);

    4. BRUCE MCLAREN (NEW ZEALAND, COOPER-CLIMAX), ONE LAP BEHIND.
