  • Description

INTRODUCTION: There were reports from Lebanon on Friday (21 January) that the Arab peacekeeping force had been authorised to seize illegally held caches of heavy weapons. The reports came on the day that the country's right-wing leaders met to discuss their hopes for Lebanon's future.

SYNOPSIS: The right wing leaders met at a monastery in the Brummana area to the east of the capital, Beirut. One of those attending the meeting was former President Camille Chamoun. He was the country's President from 1952 until 1958. He retired amid troubles in Lebanon but returned to become Minister of the Interior in 1975. Another former President at the Brummana meeting was Suleiman Franjieh who left office in September 1976 at the height of the civil war.

The grouping of the right-wing leaders has been referred to in some reports as the "Lebanese Front". Falangist, Pierre Gemayel -- on the left -- told newsmen that recommendations adopted by the group in Brummana would be submitted to other Lebanese leaders. He said the three day meeting would discuss what he called "the future of the Lebanon we want."
