Background: In the British Hard Court tennis championships finals at Bournemouth on Saturday (12 May), Britain's Virginia Wade beat former Wimbledon champion Evonne Goolagong of Australia. Miss Wade, who previously won the title in 1967 and 1960, took the GBP1,500 sterling first prize with a 6-4 6-4 win. Miss Goolagong took the GBP700 runner-up prize.

Miss Goolagong, top seed and defending title holder, had taken a 4-1 lead in the first set, but from then on Miss Wade began to dominate. After 66 minutes of play the British Champion took the prize money, and the Cup.

Later, Adriano Panatta, the Italian leader, took the GBP3,000 men's singles first prize with a shock triumph over Rumanian Ilie Nastase. The flamboyant Rumanian had beaten Panatta 3 times in the past four weeks. However Panatta won the final with a 6-8, 7-5, 6-3, 8 -6 victory.

Nastase seemed to lack concentration during the match. He looked set for an easy victory until halfway through the second set when he lost his temper with a linesman. Form then on Nastese's play went downhill. After 2 hours 59 minutes of play, Panatta took the prize. It was his third victory in nine clashes with Nastase.
