  • Description

A Turkish Airlines DC-9 jet, hijacked to Sofia, Bulgaria, by four gunmen on Wednesday (May 3) was surrendered to authorities at Sofia airport on Thursday (May 4).

The hijackers had threatened to blow up the plane and the 68 passengers and crew aboard unless the Turkish government agreed to free six members of the left-wing "Turkish People's Liberation army."
The Turkish government refused to accept the terms, but the hijackers finally surrendered after Bulgarian authorities promised them political asylum.

The hijacking had occurred minutes before the airliner was scheduled to land in Istanbul on a flight from Ankara.

All the passengers were returned to Turkey aboard another aircraft.

In ankara on Thursday, meanwhile, left-wing extremists gunned down Turkey's Gendarmerie commander, General Kemalettin Eken, and wounded him, his wife, his aide and a driver. The attack was linked with the resurgence of leftwing extremist activity which resulted in the DC-9 hijacking.

Bulgarian Television had direct transmissions from Sofia airport during the drama, and this film was shot by a Bulgarian TV cameraman.
