  • Description

Millions of Italian public employees, including civil servants, teachers, railwaymen, postal workers and hospital staff, staged a 24-hour strike throughout Italy today, and effectively brought the nation to a standstill.

The demands of the strikers included an increase in the value of the cost-of-living increments built into their labour contracts, increased pensions and increased family allowances.

Millions more workers in commerce and industry staged token, hour-long strikes in sympathy with the public sector employees.

This was the fourth time in the past four months that Italy has been without railways, air services, postal deliveries, schools and hospital facilities. But the effect of the strikes appear to be less than drastic. In fact, the Italian economy shows signs of picking up from the near-bankrupt state into which it declined last year and the Italian government's measures designed to clamp down on wage inflation do seem to be having their effect.
