Background: A Hollywood-style gala and a galaxy of international celebrities brought glitter and glamour to the East European capital of Budapest during the weekend (25-27 February) when Elizabeth Taylor celebrated her 40th birthday.
Richard Burton added another costly item to his wife's collection of jewels when he presented her with a diamond amulet set in a heart-shaped base of flowered Indian motifs. The jewel dates back to the 17th century, and is said to have been designed by the same artist who planned the Taj Mahal.
The guest list for the film star's birthday included Princess Grace of Monaco -- formerly actress Grace Kelly -- Sammy Davis Jr., former Beatle Ringo Starr, Raquel Welch and Susannah York.
The Burton's preparation for the gala occasion included flying their guests to Budapest and redecorating many of the apartments in the modern Duna Intercontinental Hotel.
SYNOPSIS: The East European capital of Budapest gained extra glitter and glamour over the weekend when a galaxy of international celebrities arrived for screen star Elizabeth Taylor's birthday. Husband Richard Burto called a special press conference to display his gift to her.
It was another item to add to Elizabeth Taylor's already-famous jewel collection. A giant water-blue diamond, set in a heart-shaped base of flowered Indian motifs. The value was not disclosed to the press, nor was the number of carats, but the amulet is said to date from the 17th century.
The Burtons' expenses for the party included lavish catering, redecoration of the hotel, and the cost of flying the guests to Hungary. Among the invited -- actor Michael Caine and a friend, Baksha Shikara.
Former Beatle Ringo Starr and his wife Maureen were present for the party weekend. Starr was the only Beatle to be invited. Also there -- Raquel Welch, sporting a broken arm.
But the Burtons stole the show. Miss Taylor wore her new gift, believed to have been designed by the same artist who designed and began building the Taj Mahal. The weekend celebrations began with a party in Budapest's most exclusive wine cellar, and later ended with a glittering ball. For Budapest -- Miss Taylor's 40th birthday party proved an extravagant occasion.
