  • Description

South African racing driver Jody Scheckter won a brilliant victory in the fifth round of the European Formula Two Championship at the Crystal Palace circuit in London on Monday (29 May).

Driving a Ford-powered McLaren M-21, Scheckter roared into the lead only four laps before the finish of the 50-lap final of the three-heat event. He finished the 69.5 mile (III.2 kilometres) final in 41 minutes 32.4 seconds with an average speed of 100.39 miles (161.55 kilometres) per hour.

Second place went to Britain's Mike Hailwood, winner of the second heat, and third place to the Argentinean driver Carles Reutemann, who won the first heat despite an injured ankle broken in a high-speed crash two months ago.

The frantic chase for positions on the grid for the final led to several accidents, one involving former world champion Graham Hill at the start of the first heat. None of the drivers was seriously injured.

Scheckter's win moves him into joint second place with Frenchman Jean Pierre Jassaud. Both men trail by three points the 15-point lead of Austrian Nikki Lauda.
