    THE ALLEGED KILLER OF EIGHT STUDENT NURSES IN A CHICAGO DORMITORY ON THE NIGHT OF JULY 14TH, MADE A BRIEF APPEARANCE IN A CHICAGO COURT YESTERDAY (MONDAY). THE MAN, RICHARD FRANKLIN SPECK, AGED 24, PLEADED NOT GUILTY THROUGH HIS ATTORNEY, MR. GERALD GETTY, THE PUBLIC DEFENDER OF COOK COUNTY.

    MAXIMUM SECURITY ARRANGEMENTS WERE IMPOSED BOTH OUTSIDE AND INSIDE THE COURT. ALL THE 70-SPECTATORS, WOMEN AS WELL AS MEN, WERE SEARCHED FOR WEAPONS OR CAMERAS. AFTER SPECK HAD PLEADED NOT GUILTY, THE JUDGE SET 18TH AUGUST AS THE DATE FOR A HEARING TO DECIDE WHEN THE TRIAL PROPER IS TO BEGIN.

    OUTSIDE THE COURTY, MR. JOSEPH T. MATUSEK WAS INTERVIEWED. MR. MATUSEK'S 20-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER, PATRICIA, WAS ONE OF THE SIX AMERICAN AND TWO FILIPINO NURSES WHO WERE KILLED ONE BY ONE BY AN INTRUDER WHO BROKE INTO THEIR DORMITORY LAST MONTH.
