  • Description

At the United Nations Saudi Arabia called on Tuesday (25 October) for the granting of independence to Namibia, the South African controlled territory also known as South West Africa.

SYNOPSIS: The call was made by Mr Jamil Baroody, Saudi Arabia's deputy permanent representative at the UN during a debate on the question of Namibia. The territory has been ruled by South Africa under a League of Nations mandate revoked by the UN some 11 years ago.

But Mr Radha Ramphul, of Mauritius, suggested that Saudi Arabia could help solve the Palestinian problem first.

Mr Ramphul's suggestion did not go down well with Mr Baroody.
