  • Description

TOP-LEVEL DISCUSSIONS ON INDIA'S CRUCIAL LANGUAGE PROBLEM WERE HELD IN NEW DELHI LAST NIGHT (TUESDAY).LEADERS OF 15 STATES MET WITH THE INDIAN PRIME MINISTER, MR.LAL BAHADUR SHASTRI, AND CABINET MINISTERS.

THE PROBLEM - WHICH SPARKED BLOODY RIOTS RECENTLY - IS WHETHER HINDI SHOULD BE THE SOLE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE OR WHETHER ENGLISH SHOULD CONTINUE ALONGSIDE IT.ONLY 40 PER CENT OF INDIANS SPEAK HINDI, AND THE OTHERS WANT TO HAVE ENGLISH RETAINED.

AFTER LAST NIGHT'S MEETING, A SPOKESMAN SAID DELEGATES SHOWED "REMARKABLE UNANIMITY." THEY DECIDED TO MAKE A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF THE PROBLEM BEFORE TAKING A DEFINITE COURSE OF ACTION.

MR.SHASHTRI HAS GIVEN ASSURANCES THAT ENGLISH WILL CONTINUE AS ASSOCIATE LANGUAGE AS LONG AS PEOPLE WANT IT.BUT MANY NON-HINDI-SPEAKING PEOPLE WANT THE CONSTITUTION AMENDED TO GUARANTEE THE STATUS OF ENGLISH.
