Background: The 1982 Rome autumn and winter fashion shows opened on July 20 in the Excelsior Hotel with Barocco's latest collection. Hem-lines were knee-length or above, and the entire collection was oriental in mood.
The tight skirts and box-shoulder jackets were nostalgic of the 1940s, but flamboyant brightly-coloured flounce in lays added a touch of 1980s daring. Perhaps the most unusual design modelled at the show was a harem-style outfit which replaced the usual balloon pants with a slashed skirt gathered at the hem by a series of tassels.
The evening and cocktail dresses combined the romantic with the revealing. Classics black was back, but the styles were vivacious rather than elegant. Billowing lace and chiffon overskirts were a popular feature, and the variation on the theme of the traditional long black evening dress was a frill-edged split at the front to mid-thigh level.
