  • Description

The possible admission of Bangladesh to the United Nations has been blocked by a veto invoked by the People's Republic of China delegate in the security Council.

The chinese Ambassador, Huang Hua, cast the veto on friday (25 August) after the resolution recommending membership had been proposed by the Soviet Union, Britain, India and Yugoslavia.

It was the first veto cast by Peking since it joined the United Nations ten months ago. It claimed Bangladesh had not implemented United Nations resolutions calling for the repatriation of the prisoners of war and civilians internees and the withdrawal of all foreign troops from Bangladesh.

When the draft resolution on admission was introduced, 11 delegates voted in favour, one against, and three abstained. China's negative vote meant the rejection of the proposal.
