  • Description

President Julius Nyerere took the salute at the first passing-out parade of Tanzanian national servicemen and women in Dar Es Salaam on Friday (25 November).

The President interrupted a tour of the southern regions of Tanzania to return to the capital for the passing-out ceremony.

More than 800 young men and women were the first to finish the voluntary two-year course in the national service. In that time they were taught skills and trades such as masonry, carpentry and mechanical engineering. They also spent part of their training helping in nation-building schemes including farming, road-works and school and housing projects.

It all came to an official end with President Nyerere on the reviewing stand to watch the uniformed men and women of the national service march past and to present awards.
