  • Description

The funeral of Spain's assassinated Prime Minister Admiral Carrero Blanco, on Friday, on Friday (December 21) because an occasion for rowdy pro-Franco demonstrations.

About 15,000 demonstrators chanted pro-Franco slogans as the body of Prime Minister Blanco was being taken for burial in the village cemetery at El Pardo on the outskirts of Madrid, the capital.

The 81-year-old General Franco did not attend the funeral, reportedly because of an attack of influenza. He was represented by the King-designate Prince Juan Carlos.

Admiral Blanco died on Thursday when a bomb, hidden in a tunnel beneath the road, blew up under his chauffeur-driven car in central Madrid. He was buried with full military honours.

Demonstrators chanted and carried banners saying "the Army to power". "Stop terrorism -- a Government with authority" and "All united against murderous Marxism." The crowd also sang the traditional Spanish hymn "Cara Al Sol", or "Face to the Sun", with right arms raised in the style of the old fascist salute.

Admiral Blanco's coffin was borne on a gun carriage escorted by soldiers, sailors, airmen and leading Spanish Government officials.
