  • Description

Two big explosions shook Belfast today (Sunday). In the first, a blast wrecked the main doors of the Crumlin Road jail in the Northern Ireland capital. Four people were injured. The bomb was thrown form a passing car by a man said to have been wearing uniform. The prison contains some of the 240 suspected members of the illegal Irish Republican Army detained under special powers two weeks ago.

The second blast completely wrecked a three-storey building in the city centre. Tons of masonry came crashing down into the street but no-one was hurt.
