  • Description

Indonesia yesterday (Friday) celebrated National Aviation Day with President Suharto as the guest of honour.

It was the first time since the late President Sukarno was ousted that Indonesia has celebrated the occasion with a major display, but it nothing like the extravaganza during the Sukarno era.

In a brief speech, President Suharto said Indonesia should fight its backwardness in aviation by starting an aviation industry of its own. The country should not be dependent on foreign-made aircraft.

After inspecting some of the static exhibits, including surface-to-air missiles, President Suharto and the crowd were treated to a fly-past by the Indonesian Air Force.

The aircraft included World War Two vintage B-25 bombers from America and Soviet-made Tupolev T-16 bombers. The flying display was kept to a minimum because many aircraft are out of action through lack of spare parts.
