  • Description

DOCKED IN SANTOS IS THE SHIP "ARGENTINA MARU" WHICH HAS BROUGHT TO BRAZIL 24 JAPANESE FAMILIES. THEY HAD SAILED FROM YOKOHAMA. TEN OF THE FAMILIES ARE GOING TO WORK ON A FARM IN THE STATE OF SAO PAULO. TEN TECHNICIANS AMONG THEM WILL USE THEIR SKILL WORKING FOR DIFFERENT JAPANESE FIRMS OPERATING THERE.

ALSO AMONG THE IMMIGRANTS ARE 10 GIRLS WHO HAVE COME TO BRAZIL TO MEET THEIR FIANCES. THEY HAD CORRESPONDED WITH JAPANESE RESIDENTS IN SAO PAULO AND MARRIAGE PROPOSALS RESULTED FROM THEIR LETTERS.

JAPANESE IMMIGRATION TO BRAZIL HAS BEEN ON THE DECLINE IN RECENT YEARS. SINCE THE END OF WORLD WAR II EACH JAPANESE SHIP BRINGING IMMIGRANTS TO BRAZIL WOULD DOCK THERE WITH AN AVERAGE OF 400 IMMIGRANTS. HOWEVER, THE "ARGENTINA MARU" BROUGHT ONLY 130. JAPANESE OFFICIALS EXPLAIN THE DECLINE AS DUE TO PROGRESS AND DEVELOPMENT OF POST-WAR JAPAN, PARTICULARLY IN INDUSTRY AND AGRICULTURE.

THESE IMMIGRANTS WILL GO TO DIFFERENT STATES TO TAKE UP JOBS IN FACTORIES AND FARMS. AT PRESENT SAO PAULO STATE HAS THE LARGEST JAPANESE COLONY.
