  • Description

NEARLY THREE MILLION CAMEROUNIANS WENT TO THE POLLS ON SATURDAY (MARCH 28) TO ELECT THEIR PRESIDENT FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS. AMONG THE EARLY VOTERS IN YAOUNDE WAS RETIRING PRESIDENT AHMADOU AHIDJO, WHO HAS RUNNING FOR A FURTHER TERM OF OFFICE AS THE ONLY PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE.

RETIRING VICE-PRESIDENT JOHN NGU FONCHA VOTED AT THE SAME YOUNDE POLLING STATION. HE IS NOT STANDING FOR RE-ELECTION. THE SOLE CANDIDATE FOR THE VICE-PRESIDENT IS M. SALOMON TENDENG MUNA, PRIME MINISTER OF WESTERN CAMEROUN.

FIRST RETURNS INDICATED THAT AN ESTIMATED 98 PER CENT OF THE COUNTRY'S ELECTORATE VOTED ON SATURDAY, GIVING WHAT WAS REGARDED AS A RESOUNDING VOTE OF CONFIDENCE IN PRESIDENT AHIDJO'S LEADERSHIP.

PRESIDENT AHIDJO CAME TO POWER IN 1960, WHEN THE FORMER FRENCH COLONY GAIANED ITS INDEPENDENCE. HIS RE-ELECTION ENSURES HIM OF A FURTHER FIVE-YEAR TERM OF OFFICE, LEADING THE CAMEROUN NATIONAL UNION PARTY. HIS ELECTION CAMPAIGN STRESSED THE NEED FOR UNIFICATION AND PLEDGED GOVERNMENT PRIORITY FOR IMPROVED COMMUNICATIONS TO LINK THE COUNTRY'S DIFFERENT REGIONS.
