  • Description

As United States hostility over snowballing Japanese imports reached critical proportions, Japanese Foreign Minister Kiichi Aichi yesterday (monday) started two hours of crucial talks with U.S. Secretary of State William Rogers at the State Department, Washington.

Japan's textile exports to the United States are at the centre of the negotiations. The Japanese are currently shipping non-cotton textiles worth about 500 million dollars to the U.S. every year.

The Nixon administration wants Japan to impose voluntary restrictions on textiles exported to the U.S. -- otherwise Congress could be obliged to pass tough protectionist legislation which might extend to other Japanese exports as well.
