  • Description

UK Foreign Secretary Selwyn Lloyd flew from London to Paris Nov 11 - Armistice Day - for two-days of talks with French leaders to improve relations between the two allies.

On arrival at Orly Airport he said if the two nations were drifting apart, now was the time to take stock. This was his first visit to Paris since the Macmillan Government returned to power last month.

The talks at the French Foreign Ministry began shortly afterwards. Spokesmen later said the real differences between the two countries were not as great as had been reported, in particular on the approaches to a Summit.

Other topics discussed: the Paris visits by Eisenhower and Khruschev, and disarmament. Next day Foreign Secretary Lloyd was conferring with Prime Minister Debre and President De Gaulle.

Shortly before Lloyd was due to meet French Premier Debre, a new obstacle in relations erupted, with an officially inspired statement in the Paris Press of France's displeasure over London's reception of President Sekou Toure of Guinea, now on an official visit to Britain.

Respect shown to President Toure - who defied President De Gaulle on the question of his country's independence - was regarded as an unfriendly gesture in France, the statement said.

But despite this view, French Foreign Ministry sources maintained the atmosphere of talks with Selwyn Lloyd was friendly, and differences between the two countries were not fundamental.

The really important occasion for Anglo-French talks would be in April when President De Gaulle goes to Britain on a State visit, the sources said. This visit comes after Khruschev's visit to Paris and before the Summit.
