Official sources quoted by Reuters said the President escaped unharmed but that a presidential bodyguard was among those killed when three grenades were hurled into the official reviewing stand.

Four shots from an automatic weapon cracked out after the explosions. The march past Chad's military leaders stopped briefly, then resumed.

It was not known who made the attack or if anyone had been arrested.

Leaflets were distributed in N'Djamena last week threatening disturbances at the parade celebrating the coup in which former President Ngarta Tombalbaya was killed.

The wounded included the wives of Chad's Interior and Finance Ministers. Some newsmen from local news organisations were in a critical condition. No members of the Military Council were among the casualties.
