  • Description

The Presidents of three west African countries have just had their periodic meeting at which they discuss regional, African and world affairs.

SYNOPSIS: The Presidents are Senyi Lountche of Niger - here leaving the aeroplane; Gnassingbe Eyadema of Togo; and Sangoula Lamizama of Upper Volta, who was the host for this year's meeting at the south-eastern Upper Volta town of Tenkodogo. The three leaders last met in November in the Togolese frontier town of Dapaon, although the following month President Eyadema paid a return visit to Niger. The two leaders then issued a strongly worded communique against foreign interference in the Angolan civil war, which has since ended in victory for the MPLA - the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola.

The Togolese and Niger leaders received a warm reception in Tenkodogo.

The three Presidents belong to the Entente Council, the oldest regional organisation in Africa and the two guest Presidents helped negotiate the end to the border dispute between Upper Volta and Mali last year.

The crisis was over a strip of land about 90 miles long which runs partly along the Beli river, the only source of fresh water in the region.

The three Presidents are also believed to have discussed the terms of the newly created Economic Community of West African States, which has ended customs duties and other restrictions on trade between member countries.

President Eyadema of Togo was one of the founder members of the organisation. The Treaty of Lagos in June last year achieved agreement on some of the objectives. Togo and the Ivory Coast are members but Niger did not sign the agreement.

The talks only lasted a day. President Kountche, who survived an attempted coup in March returned to Niger. The identity of those who took part in the coup was never released, but death sentences were carried out on nine people in April.
