  • Description

The craftsman of The People's Republic of China are crating new works to reflect the struggle of revolutionary peoples all over the world.

Today, models of Palestinian Liberation Army soldiers stand alongside traditional pottery and porcelain figures, animals, vassals and potted scenery in factories like the one in Kwangchow shown in this film.

The Chines Cultural Revolution holds that literature and art must serve the workers, peasants and soldiers - so the craftsmen often leave their co-operatives and go among them to get a deeper understanding of their new subjects.

Shihwan pottery and porcelain has a history of more than 800 years. Its technique has been handed down through the generations, but it is only since the People's Republic was founded in 1949 that production has been enlarged and developed.

The craftsmen used to work on their own but more than thirty small workshops have been joined together to form this producer's co-operative. It became a state enterprise in 1958 and now has almost five hundred workers - most of them women. There are seven processes in the production creation, model making, shaping, polishing, painting, glazing and baking.
