  • Description

THE QUEEN AND THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH WERE RECEIVED WITH CHEERS AND GENERAL ACCLAIM BY BIG CROWDS IN BONN TODAY (WEDNESDAY)ON THE SECOND DAY OF THE STATE VISIT TO WEST GERMANY. THE QUEEN'S FIRST ENGAGEMENT WAS THE LAYING OF A WREATH AT A WAR MEMORIAL, THEN ANOTHER AT A STATUE OF THE COMPOSER LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN. THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY A VISIT TO THE BONN TOWN HALL. IN THE AFTERNOON, THE QUEEN AND PRINCE PHILIP ATTENDED A RECEPTION GIVEN BY THE COMMONWEALTH AMBASSADORS AT THE REDOUTE HOTEL, AND LATER A BANQUET WHICH THE QUEEN GAVE AT THE PETERSBURG RESIDENCE FOR PRESIDENT LUEBKE.

THE CROWDS, SAID TO BE BIGGER THAN THOSE WHICH TURNED OUT FOR PRESIDENTS DE GAULLE AND KENNEDY DURING THEIR HISTORIC VISITS, GAVE THE QUEEN AND THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH A TREMENDOUS WELCOME DURING THEIR TIGHTLY-PACKED SERIES OF ENGAGEMENTS IN THE CITY CENTRE.

THE QUEEN'S FIRST ENGAGEMENT ILLUSTRATED THE UNDERLYING PURPOSE OF HER 11-DAY VISIT - TO SEAL THE RECONCILIATION OF THE TWO NATIONS. SHE AND THE DUKE DROVE FROM THEIR HILLTOP RESIDENCE OVERLOOKING THE RHINE TO THE MEMORIAL IN BONN'S HOFGARTEN TO THE "VICTIMS OF THE WARS OF TYRANNY".

A LONE TRUMPETER PLAYED SOFTLY THE TRADITIONAL SOLDIER'S SONG "ICH HAT EINEN KAMERADEN" (I HAD A COMRADE) AS THE QUEEN LAID A WREATH ON THE MEMORIAL TO THE VICTIMS OF NAZI CONCENTRATION CAMPS AS WELL AS GERMANS.

THE QUEEN, WEARING A PALE SEA GREEN COAT AND DRESS, WITH MATCHING HAT, WAS DRIVEN AT SNAIL'S PACE THROUGH STREETS PACKED 10 DEEP TO THE BEETHOVEN MEMORIAL. THE CROWDS SEEMED UNCERTAIN WHAT TO SHOUT IN GREETING TO THE QUEEN - CRIES OF "HEIL" HAVE BEEN FROWNED ON BECAUSE THEY RECALL THE NAZI DAYS. INSTEAD SOME SHOUTED "ELIZABETH" AND OTHERS "VIVA LA QUEEN."
AT BONN'S TOWN HALL (THE RATHAUS) THE QUEEN WAS GREETED BY HER HOST, PRESIDENT HEINRICH LUEBKE, AND DR. WILHELM DANIELS, LORD MAYOR OF BONN. THE QUEEN MOUNTED THE ORNATE OUTSIDE STAIRCASE TO LOOK OUT ACROSS A SEA OF FACES AND WAVING FLAGS. EVERY WINDOW BORDERING THE SQUARE WAS OCCUPIED BY SPECTATORS; SOME CLAMBERED ON TO THE ROOFS TO SEE AND CHEER THE ROYAL PARTY. WHEN THE QUEEN LEFT AFTER SIGNING BONN'S GOLD BOOK AND RECEIVING AN ALBUM OF LONG-PLAYING RECORDS OF BEETHOVEN SYMPHONES, THE CROWDS RUSHED FORWARD, BRINGING HER CAR TO A HALT.

IN THE AFTERNOON, THE QUEEN CHANGED INTO A DAZZLING ICE-BLUE SATIN DRESS AND JACKET WITH MATCHING HAT BEFORE DRIVING TO A RECEPTION GIVEN BY COMMONWEALTH AMBASSADORS AT THE FASHIONABLE REDOUTE HOTEL. THE DAY'S ENGAGEMENTS ENDED WITH THE QUEEN'S RECEPTION FOR PRESIDENT LUEBKE OF WEST GERMANY, GIVEN AT THE PETERSBURG RESIDENCE.

IT'S ESTIMATED THAT SOMETHING LIKE A QUARTER OF A MILLION PEOPLE TURNED OUT TO WELCOME THE ROYAL COUPLE AT ENGAGEMENTS IN AND AROUND THE WEST GERMAN CAPITAL. IT HAD BEEN A DAY, CORRESPONDENTS SAY, ON WHICH THE QUEEN AND THE DUKE HAD MADE THE GERMANS FEEL THAT AT LAST THEY'RE RECOGNISED BY AND RECONCILED TO BRITAIN AFTER HOSTILITIES OF 1939-1945.

(THREATS AGAINST THE LIFE OF BRITAIN'S QUEEN ELIZABETH HAVE BEEN MADE IN SEVERAL LETTERS RECEIVED IN MUNICH, IT WAS OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED TONIGHT. THE HEAD OF THE CITY'S SECURITY POLICE SAID HE BELIEVED THE AUTHORS MENTALLY DERANGED AND THE POLICE ATTACHED NO PARTICULAR IMPORTANCE TO THE LETTERS.)
