    THREE HUNDRED AUSTRALIAN TROOPS TODAY (SATURDAY), LEFT SINGAPORE ABOARD THE TROOPSHIP AUBY FOR MALAYSIAN BORNEO. THEY ARE THE MAIN BODY OF THE THIRD BATTALION, ROYAL AUSTRALIAN REGIMENT. THE TROOPS CAME FROM THE TERENDAK COMMONWEALTH CAMP IN MALACCA, A COASTAL TOWN WET OF MALAYA.

    WHILE IN BORNEO, THEY WILL SERVE IN ROTATION WITH BRITISH AND MALAYSIAN MILITARY UNITS GUARDING THE 900-MILE SARAWAK BORDER AGAINST INDONESIAN INCURSIONS.

    THIS THE FIRST TIME AUSTRALIAN TROOPS HAVE BEEN SENT FOR SERVICE OUTSIDE THE MALAYAN PENINSULA.

    AUSTRALIA AT PRESENT HAS ABOUT 3,400 SERVICEMEN IN MALAYSIA. SOME OF THESE MEN HAVE BEEN USED IN ROUNDUPS OF INDONESIAN INFILTRATORS IN THE WEST COAST OF MALAYA. AUSTRALIAN FORCES HAD BEEN STATIONED FOR ABUT 10 YEARS IN THE MALAYAN AREA AS PART OF THE COMMONWEALTH STRATEGIC RESERVE.
