Background: His Highness Sheikh Ahmad Ben li Al Thani, Ruler of Qatar, has inaugurated a new housing scheme in the north of Qatar. He handed over 74 villas which will house a total of 409 people, at the opening of a project known s Al Shamal city (city of the north). This official film shows the hand-over ceremony.
Al Shamal city is equipped with both water and power supplies, a mosque and a hospital. Steps are being taken to build soon further facilities, such as two schools and a shopping centre.
The new project is part of the ambitious development programme being pushed ahead in Qatar with the revenue earned from exporting oil. Revenue amounts to more than GBP40 million (96 million U.S. dollars) per year. Qatar is a member of the O.P.E.C. group of Arab oil-producing states which recently won higher oil prices from its customers.
