  • Description

Australia won the Ashes -- the trophy fought over by English and Australian cricketers -- with a convincing win in the fourth test in Sydney on Thursday (9 January).

They have now won three, and drawn one of the six test series and are in an unassailable position.

England started the last day with 33 runs for no wickets. But the stumps fell steadily throughout the day, with only John Edrich and Bob willis holding out against the Australian bowler's onslaught.

John Edrich was playing his first game as captain. He was struck by a skidding, bounced ball from Dennis Lillee in the morning and was forced to retire. He returned three-and-a-half hours later and ended the day by making 33 not out.

England were dismissed for 228 when Arnold was caught by Greg Chappell within half a dozen overs of the end of play.
