  • Description

Viscount Cobham, Governor General of New Zealand, was filmed by Visnews May 30 as he unveiled a commemorative tablet and leading the first official drive over Auckland's new GBP6 million harbour bridge.

Also present at the opening ceremony were New Zealand Premier Walter Nash and Sir John Allum, Chairman of the Bridge Authority.

After 100 years of dreaming and discussion, inquiry and argument, the seven-span 3,520 feet long bridge over Waitemata Harbour is open and carrying traffic. Construction began 1955.

Completely British in design and construction, the Bridge links the overcrowded business area of Auckland with the Borough of Northcote on the North Shore. It well afford expansion to the sparsely populated North Shore.
