  • Description

At Wimbledon the American top seed Chris Evert dethroned the women's singles title-holder Virginia Wade of Britain in an outstanding semi-final played in difficult conditions. Evert, aged 23, was champion in 1974 and 1976, and took the semi-final in a demonstration of top class tennis.

SYNOPSIS: A fifteen all, Chris Evert was on her way to avenging the defeat she suffered at the hands of Virginia wade at the same stage of the tournament last year.

Both players showed fine form but Miss Evert managed to pin her opponent to the baseline with a series of deep accurate returns.

Miss Evert didn't have it all her own way, with Miss Wade often showing the brilliance that gained her the title last year.

Miss Wade was still on the back line for the final volley, which Miss Evert won to take the match in two sets, 8-6, 6-2.

There was drama in the other major women's singles match, between Martina Navratilova serving here, and Evonne cawley of Australia. Mrs. Cawley has been suffering considerable pain from an injury to her left heel, and at times she was limping. Mrs. Cawley won the first set, but the effects of her injury took their toll later in match.

Miss Navratilova took the match in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, and said later that she became unhappy for her opponent when it became obvious that Mrs. Cawley's ankle was starting to let her down.
